UPDATE

Crazy Busy in our neck of the woods. Sorry for the delay. Here's the latest:

CARD SWAP GIRLS: This is a sneak peak of what you are about to recieve!!!! If you are one of the last two who still need to get me your cards, SEND THEM or GET THEM TO ME ASAP because the punctual participants are waiting on you. No pressure right???? Anyway, as soon as I get the last batches I'll send you your amazing package.

Check out my amazing students. I swear they are taking "good pills" because they PALE in comparrison to the slightly CRAZY bunch of last year. Seriously, I tell them everyday how much I love them. My job is actually what I do now instead of my whole entire life.
In the midst of moving, we managed to get some great small town fun in. We went to annual Pine Valley dinner and made it just in time to get in on the BBQ before clean up time. There had been over 600 people there and we heard Alana may have been one of them but we were late so we missed her. Quinn says these small town shin digs are what America is all about. All I could think of was the amazing less then frying pan temperture weather. It was beautiful. I love it up there.
Last weekend we had to scratch Western Legends (so sad) in lou of moving, but we did manage to make it up to Enterprise for the cornfest instead. This is me contemplating the never before thought that corn can taste an aweful lot like candy. We had to pull together our quarters for the cobs, but it was worth the extra mileage. I think this will have to be an annual tradition.
DHSers: IF YOU HAVE PICTURES FOR THE REUNION SLIDE SHOW (10 years, reallly!?!?!?!) you need to email them to me ASAP: nhadley@scmiddle.org
I am making the slideshow this week (duh- the reunion is saturday).

Williams - Old Memories (3)

Pauliana

This is my favorite one of Joe and my sisters. I could blackmail him with this one:)

Williams - Old Memories

Found these old pictures while going through high school photos for the reunion dvd that Nicole is putting together. I had to share. There will be more to come.

Orchids

Don't tell the other orchids on the block, but typically when the blooms die I just throw it away. How sad is that? I'm seeing shades of horses who get a bullet in the head for a broken leg, but it's just too painful to wait for it to bloom again, all the while looking at nothing but sticks in a pot. I am determined this time to prune it and keep it around until next blooming season. It's so worth it when they bloom... fresh flowers for months and months! So... I guess I'll let her live and nurse her through her hibernation. I deserve to go to heaven for this.

Communism

...only works among perfect people. The problem isn't the philosophy, it's that it is realistically impossible to trust anyone on earth with getting it right.

Three Questions:
1. Have you ever read Animal Farm?? This is a must. It details Russia's failed attempt at establishing a functioning socialistic society. The good part is that it's a story about pigs. Ha- pigs. Imagine that, a communist story that represents leaders as pigs. You can read it with my class and I in January if you want.
2. Are you crazy, your haircut is HOT!
3. Whay aren't you writing a column in some tribune somewhere?... oh wait, they're all too liberal right?

PS- School has been crazy and I moving this week, so if I promise to come back from the abiss in a few days. I feel like the black hole of craz-no-time-to-do-it-all-ness sucked my in and won't let me go. Busy is good though, because we all know how psycho I can get with too much time on my hands. Hasta...

Budding Social Scientists

I'm going to try and re-create mine and Brandon's conversation we had last night for you. It kept us up way past bed time and you'll surely agree that it's some of the strangest pillow talk you've ever heard. Helpfully, I will write my words in pink and Brandino's in blue.

"I can't believe that 1/5 of humanity is freaking Chinese! I'm so grateful I'm not Chinese."

"What? I wish I was Chinese. I think it would be nice to be Communist."

"PARDON ME??"

"Yeah, I think it would be way less stressful."

"What if they made you work in the coal mines?"

"Maybe they would have me do something good like be a jet pilot."

"But you have bad eyesight."

"Well, whatever, at least I wouldn't have the stress of choosing what to do."

"What if they assigned you to be a ballerina and rehearse Nutcracker with Bene Arnold year-round?"

"Still, it would be worth being taken care of."

"Taken care of? You think China takes care of its citizens? Have you been living underneath a rock? Don't you love America and knowing you can do whatever you choose, and have infinite possibilities?"

"Still, it would be nice to know that you just didn't have a choice of what to do... and if you couldn't support your family, at least it wouldn't be your fault."

(insert various exploitives from Alana's swear-tionary)
Don't worry, we were also hysterically giggly. It was light-hearted.

Yes folks, this was the gist of it. We went on and on arguing for an hour and a half. OH, if only I could understand the mind of Brandon.

But hey, he does have a few valid points... none of which include, "Maybe they would make me a fighter pilot."

When I was little I remember dwelling on the origin of money. I harassed my Mom with so many questions around 3rd grade that she finally bought me a book about it to shut me up. It was some fable about how money began and it satisfied nothing, only stirring more questions.

"Why do we need money?" "Why don't we just trade for stuff?" "How did money start?" "Why don't the rich just share with the poor and we could all be equal?" "Mom, why don't they just sell everything at the store for a penny and then everyone will buy it and they will make more money?" I didn't realize that it costs money to produce products.

The whole concept of working for money really boggled my brain. What was natural to my brain was communism, consecration... the commonwealth! I think I came into the world with those ideas innate. What's even stranger is that Brandon said he thought the same as a child. The beauty of this is that I think it could be the "higher law", as innate ideas are usually TRUTH.

So... in a perfect world with perfect people, I think a commonwealth is indeed more "righteous". But, it's just not realistic. Not for me anyway... I am too selfish and paranoid of others selfishness. PLUS, it just never works... not forever anyway. Just go and ask your Mormon progenitors for a bedtime story. (perhaps entitled: My Neighbor Has a Bigger Barn; KISS OFF!) The Utopian society: a precious, sweet, My-Little-Pony ideal, never permanently and peacefully realized. We are mouldering in corruption, after all.

Paul, how could we forget our Utopia in Literature class at Dixie College? We had to read Utopia, Brave New World, and Lost Horizon. By the time our Brave New World assignment arrived Paul and I thought it a brilliant idea that we would each read half the book and tell the other about it. This didn't work so well... Paul, you know you got the good half!

Do you realize that there are places in the world TODAY fighting for their right to... yes, socialism, as they think Capitalism is pure evil?

But back to China. I think a lot of them genuinely have pride in their country, truly believing in their Maoist ideals, willing to suffer whatever they're handed for the "better good". All for one, one for all. And I can respect that. BUT, I'm even more for a revolt. Who doesn't love a good-old-fashioned revolution? Don't you think it's just a matter of time? And if they're not going to go after themselves then they're coming after us next... "The Sleeping Dragon", any away you look at it.

During the closing ceremonies last night I was just envisioning the grand finale to be a series of nuclear missiles being launched from the "memory tower"... one headed towards each continent. If they're trying to create a new image, they might start with NOT scaring the crap out of us with 2,000 warrior drummers, likely chanting "you don't stand a chance, there's a billion of us suckers".

But back to Mormons. We are asked to live the law of tithing, supposing that this is a grade-school, mini-version of the law of consecration. (table consecration) "We just have to practice and if we get it right, we'll get to be commies! Yay!"

To get serious, I certainly believe in tithing and I do believe consecration is a higher law. When I'm "on fire with the spirit" (hallelujah!), as in feeling charity, I can see how IT IS SO. Plus, I came in to this world with my brain wired that way... innocently. Now, some reigning body telling me I can only bear one child... not so innocent, and sorta evil. No one has got it quite right yet.

Our lovely conversation ended with me vehemently telling Brandon to just "go ahead and vote for Obama then ... see how you like socialized medicine." Again, a nice idea... until he wants that elective ruptured-disc surgery he's been eyein'. Likely, he would end up in a lottery until his number came up... congratulations... you get surgery! What??!! This is America! Yes, some people get the shaft and don't have health care, but it's the LESS of two evils! Don't give in to the temptation of a handout; more government is a slippery road. The American story is independence!

I better quit, as I haven't even gotten started.

Awwww

Happy Hour

Though I wish happy hour meant a bottle of rum with a nipple on it, it simply means microwave nachos during Anika's naptime and a little blogging.

I promised Nicole a photo of my butt-rocker mullet. My own ugly face makes me laugh! I think I need a shrink to help me figure out if that is a sign of healthy or poor self-esteem!!?? While I am no-kind-a cute... this girl is all kinds-a-cute!.....

TYPICAL DAY FOR A TYPICAL HOUSEWIFE

Typical? No! How often does a shut-in get to escape to the beauty salon? Sitting under the hair dryer reading a gossip magazine while my Mom babysits is about as far away as I get from reality. It's my little "mini vaca". I think I might have blown it with the bangs again... perhaps they are too thick? Why can't I get it right? I was going for Reese Witherspoon or Heidi Klum, and ended up with Steve Tyler.

The day continued with the usual suspects: Anika's nap, diet coke, post office, car wash, and a special trip to Albys for fresh mozzarella to accompany the garden veggies and chicken for dinner. Here's where it gets even more housewife-ey.... So, Brandon comes home and I say, "Honey, do you like my hair?" ... a simple, "No". wth? The next thing out of his mouth as he walks to the dinner table is, "Oh sick, I HATE cucumbers, they're my most hated thing in the world!" So now dinner was a bust too.

By now, my neck and head are aching and I stand at the medicine cabinet staring blankly into it, only wishing there was something stronger than tylenol to choose from. I escape for a hot evening shower... partly for my neck ache but mostly because that's one of the only places I am safe from Anika. The shower is the one place no one can get you. (unless you want them to. he he he he.)

Eventless and predictable.

In Brandon's defense... I love that he always gives me an honest opinion. If you ever are looking for a truthful opinion, come to Brandon, as he is somehow immune to those subtle (and blatant!) social rules. But that's what I love!!!! When he tells me I look beautiful or he looooves my dinner, he means it! I can always trust his opinion so I never get offended.

Back in the day....

So, now I just can't sleep, and since that last post my mind is reeling with flashbacks. Just before moving here I was soo into Pearl Jam. Laura Krog (who can think Laura Krog without also thinking.... smoking cigars naked in a hot tub with the boys of the Park City ski team?) and I even had "Eddie Vedder is better with cheddar" written with marker on our backpacks. (Yes, a lovely slogan we made up ourselves because we were so obsessed) Such dorks! Would you guys still have made friends with me if I hadn't bought a new one when I started school here? Kind of wish I kept it. He is pretty hot though. Click Here.

I just wish I was older at the time so I could have gone to a Pearl Jam concert. By the time I reached concert-going age (what's that?) me and Brad, Josh and Jeremy went to THIS concert. We were in the 8th row and I am positive I have permanent hearing loss. It was way too much fun though! Scott Weiland, though kinda creepy, still has that rock-star hot factor.

So, is this weird, but I kind of have a crush on Kid Rock!? Same strange rocker factor I suppose. Confession time: I actually had a Kid Rock CD goin' strong in my car for a few weeks. What??... And you thought you knew me!

Back to the early 90's: How could I forget THIS? That was another tape I owned. I miss tapes. Creepy video though... I 'm pretty sure his pupils shouldn't be that freakishly dilated.

In 5th grade I called into our So. Cal radio station to request THIS and actually made it on the air. Too funny! I think I thought I was 20 years old???? I remember this music video like it was yesterday!

I'm really on a roll here and could go on for days. It's weird how hearing that music takes you back. Let's not forget to mention U2, as I totally agree with Paul on this one- they just might be the greatest rock band ever. When CD players first came out my family bought one (1988) and guess what the very 1st CD we ever bought and played was???? U2's Rattle and Hum. Still my favorite album!!!!!!!!!!!! My love began at a wee 8 years old. I used to build blanket forts around the CD player and read the lyrics from the album cover while I listened. U2 came to Salt Lake when I lived there and they put a "2" next to the "U" on the mountain. At the concert Bono said "Thanks guys... at least we're not the Red Hot Chili Peppers!"

Too bad I wasn't born sooner, maybe I could have seen THESE GUYS in concert.

or THIS.

AND... My ultimate concert-going fantasy I missed by decades: PINK FLOYD

Ok, just had a little intermission giving Anika a bottle and reality hit: Why am I up? Why is it that when you are the most overtired you do not sleep? Shouldn't I be counting sheep? This is one of those posts you do when your brain is weird and then you wake up regretting it. I don't think I'm thinking straight.

Table Tennis?

At the risk of offending any Table Tennis fans... I just can't say "table tennis" with a straight face. Brandon and I discovered it (ping pong!) last night around 2 am while up with a miserable child. Seriously, do these people really consider themselves Olympic athletes, or athletes at all? Perhaps we could have a little, mini, table version of every sport. Brandon is way into it and when I watch with him I am convinced I am watching an SNL skit. It's just not doing it for me.

I'll tell you what else is not doing it for me... the divers. I like the diving, yes, but just when a girl goes thinking she likes speedos, she sees a whole other species of men wearing them. I'm really not down with short divers on gaystrogen that hop immediately in to the shower with other men after their dive. Have you also seen them hop in to the hot tub? What is this?! Life lesson: all speedos are not created equal.... I'll stick with my 6'8" swimming and water polo hotties. I asked Brandon if I could get a poster of the US Water polo team for our bedroom. He laughed, especially when I showed him what it might look like... click here if you dare. Actually, I chickened out on the link as it might be a little too risque for this blog.

But hey, remember posters? I laugh just thinking about the whole notion of posters. I can't figure out if posters were an age thing (adolescence) or an 80's-90's thing. Does anyone know if kids these days still do posters? I'm interested in what posters you guys had back in the day. Brandon had a Karl Malone poster. I was such a poster girl... starting with the kitties from the book orders and maturing around 4th and 5th grade to New Kids on the Block. I also had a Debbie Gibson poster, a BUNS and Roses poster (just some guy in jeans holding roses with the "Buns n Roses" caption"), and my favorite... a Johnny Depp 21 Jumpstreet poster, which I majorly wish I still had. You just NEVER outgrow Johnny Depp. Come on girls, fess up! I know I can't be the only one that had a 90210 Luke Perry poster!

WEIRD: Buns n Roses triggered the surfacing of a repressed memory... My Guns n Roses Don't Cry single tape! Whoa, tapes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It played over and over for hours one night as I wrote sentences. Do you remember being punished in class by writing sentences? You girls may have been obedient students but I ALWAYS had to do that... that one night in particular (6th grade) I got sent home with orders to complete hundreds of sentences stating something to the effect of "I will not ???? blah blah blah in class." Can't remember. But I DO remember my Don't Cry (CLICK LINK) single tape. Still a great song! You just NEVER outgrow Guns n Roses. Axl Rose, I love you!!!!!!!!!!!! Few things still have the ability to make me seriously rock out and Guns n Roses is one of 'em. Another hilarious 6th grade flashback courtesy of Axl and Slash: Laying out at the park with my boom box (YES!! I said boom box!!!!!) listening to Paradise City ( CLICK LINK) I looove you Axl! They just DO NOT make rock bands like they used to!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the deepest abyss of my soul, I yearn to be a rock star!!!!!!!! Now all sorts of memories are flooding me and don't even tell me you can think 1991 without THIS coming to your mind. I wonder how many times I listened to this?! Do you remember exactly what you were doing when you heard about Kurt Cobain? Advanced art class... walking to the sink. Funny how things stick. I wish I could have experienced middle school with you guys!!!

P.S. Let's not forget that Cara dated US Water Polo players, one seriously. Poor Cara, she apparently got bored and moved on to the US Sailing team. Don't you just hate her? I guess I have some sympathy for her... can you imagine dating these guys and then moving to St. George? You just don't find THAT at singles night in the cultural hall. Talk about ruined (maybe even scarred) for life.

Williams Family - Oaks Park

We went with Herb's family to Oaks Amusement Park. It was over 100 degrees and we were all hot, but it was fun. Herbie wasn't a big fan of the rides but we made him go anyways.

Sorry that I am posting a bunch of posts in a row. Enjoy! Because it may take me awhile before I get to post again.

Sage Williams - Swim Lessons

Sage is taking swimming lessons for two weeks. This is her first time taking them and she is loving it. She is doing so well. Some of the kids in her class have retaken level one 4 and 6 times. I doubt she will have to repeat. She is a little fish.

Williams

Sorry I haven't been posting for awhile. Life has been crazy. Between taking my mom to doctor appointments, doing homework, trying to spend more time with Herb in the evenings, and entertaining my children during the day; it is hard to find an extra moment to participate in this blog thing.

Sage and Herbie swimming at our favorite outdoor pool. They both love the frog slide.

BAD CASE OF DA BABY MUNCHIES

I feel the Anika-blog diet has been sufficient and I deserve a binge. Today I discovered that she has sprouted molars! What?! In other worthless news, she got her first pair of pink Chuck's (pictured here). Awwww. We went to Pine Valley today and of course, the swing was a big hit, as always. She is way into her letters these days. She knows O, X, B, H, A, T, J, S, and the newest, P! One day she just brought me the "O" block and said "O". That was way back in the day when I thought she only knew "X" so I was shocked.
Her favorite is "O" and she finds them everywhere... like on the Coleman tent logo, the Costco cart, and event things that just look like them, like hair rubber bands or frames. The other day I was unlocking the door and she kept saying "X" and pointing. I couldn't figure out where this "X" was but finally found it in the gutter we had just stepped over. It was a small piece of packaging plastic shaped as an "X".

She's so funny- she constantly wants little snacks like crackers, though I'm not sure how much actually makes it into her tummy.... the other day I was knee-deep in Frito bits on my carpet. How dang cute is this little backside? I love her to bits and pieces. Just had to get a little Anika out of my system... thanks!

Class of '98

News Flash:

I am making the slideshow for the reunion and so far I don't have that many pictures or video clips so... PULEASE look through your old stuff and see if you have any from highschool. Email them (You'll probably have to take some time to scan them but it's worth it) to me at my hotmail or nhadley@scmiddle.org

Ciara- do you have any old yearbook stuff????? Where did all of that go?

Happy 28 Paul!

It was a whopping 10 years ago today, Paul, that you awoke to a rooster alarm and a sign that said "run to the bridge". Has it really been 10 years? You are the last to turn 28, so at the end of the birthday season I am finally remembering birthdays! I found these ancient pictures. I also found this picture of our Mexico road trip and am cracking up... I'm suddenly in the mood for a ham sandwich and a boiled egg.

I can't believe we used to jump off of this... that was totally something I don't think I'd do ever again.... one of those 18, ignorance- is- bliss items. That's YOU way up high in the sky.

I remember this picture... you are washing your dishes in the river.

Oh to be 18 again! But 28's not so bad either... Happy Birthday Paul!

Wet Swimmers On the Brain

Fine, I suppose I'll be the one that has to say what we're all thinking. Seriously, where do they find these guys?.. and... can I go there? Those bodies, you have to be kidding me, it almost hurts to look at them. I never thought I was a speedo girl, but...... and also, those long low-cut swimiming tights? And don't even get me started on Men's Waterpolo.
Let's all be grateful that the Olympics will blow over before I'm "in heat".

Men's Relay

Did anyone see this live lastnight? I think I may have cried?! If you haven't already seen the Men's 4X100 Relay, check it out here.

Thursday, August 7, 2008

I finally bought a cheap-o print of one of my favorite paintings. "Lovers in Moonlight". I love Chagall's "lovers" paintings. My life is so boring, I can't believe I'm blogging this.

King's Creek

We had so much fun this last weekend that we are going to try and go back pretty soon. We went to Tropic Reservoir by Bryce. We have camped there many times, just for fishing, or with Brandon's family, and even when Brandon drew the Paunsaugunt. Anyway, Anika was a perfect angel, much to my surprise. She had so much fun and she is the happiest when she is out of the house and doing something new. Her words of the weekend were "hiking", "Hailey", and "Jack" (the dog). She even slept great in the tent and gave me absolutely no grief the whole trip! Thank you Anika!

She likes to try everything out as a chair and was
sittingon Brandon's tub of night crawlers.

We love to camp here so we can fish the East Fork of the Sevier. Obviously,
it is tragically low and slow in August
but believe it or not, there are a bunch of deep holes where some nice Brown's hang out. I didn't see any of those BIG browns, of course... I was a little rusty. But these days, it doesn't take much at all to satisfy me. I was happy to just be out there. Brandon packed Anika in the backpack and fished with his ugly stick, while I got some alone fishing time down"river", stream, trickle, whatever. Oh blessed day!

Individuality Rears Its Ugly Head

I think I have a couple class pictures... Kindergarten and 1st that I am wearing the same shirt. All the girls are in their pretty little dresses, with tights and baby doll shoes... and there I am, in my lilac Cabbage Patch T-shirt. It was my favorite and I wore it nearly every day for an untold amount of time. And the best part is... my Mom let me. She let me pick out everything I wore. She said I didn't like sparkles, ruffles, or bows. What has changed? I have a VIVID memory of being in Payless and picking my shoes by what footprint they made. I didn't care what the actual shoe looked like, only what print it made in the dirt. We had plenty of dirt on our "ranch", so the footprint was serious business. I'd pick up a shoe, flip it over, inspect the sole, and move on to the next....

I love that my Mom let me be myself. I don't know if it got me far BUT, I plan on letting Anika do the same. If she wants to wear a Superman costume to the grocery store, or a tutu for weeks at a time, or even... a lilac Cabbage Patch T-shirt, so be it.

When I shower I put her in her jumper in the doorway and try to entertain her with things I draw on the steamy glass. I usually also hand her something fun to play with. This morning I handed her this headband. I didn't even think she knew what it was, and maybe she didn't but I turned around and she had somehow placed it perfectly on her head. She wouldn't let me take it off all morning. Even after nap she found it sitting on the counter and demanded she have it to wear. I take her to look in the mirror and you can tell she thinks it's pretty. She smiles really big, nearly blushing. I had to laugh because this is the first time she has demonstrated an opinion about what she wears, and it got me thinking that there will be lots of this to come! (Keep your fingers crossed that she doesn't have my taste.)

I'm officially crazy...

So... I'm starting to think the more I rescind from social interaction, the more I detest social interaction. Is this a bad quality? Quinn is about ready to strangle me. This is the zillionth time in a row I have refused to go with him to hang out with his friends. I don't feel anxiety, I just don't care to really interact with anyone at all. I mean, I can do it, I can be quite the life of the party, but as I seep further and further into my cave I keep asking myself.... why?

Williams - We finally Painted!!!

I made bracelets for Herbie and Sage when I was at Girls Camp. Just wanted to show off how cute they are. Couldn't get Herbie to sit still long enough to get a non-blurry photo.

We did it! I have been wanting to paint the living room, hallway, and kitchen for a long time so we finally did it. We dropped Herbie and Sage off at Grandma & Grandpa Williams' house on Friday night and then painted all day Saturday. I love it! Taping the stripe to paint it took forever and it was hard to get it straight but it paid off in the end. When we were doing it, we kept wondering if it was really worth it!

Does anyone want to do a card swap? Don't know what a card swap is? Look HERE, but basically you make X amount of the same homemade card (depending on how many people want to do it), then you mail it to me. I reorganize everything so that everybody gets one of each card and then mail you back a fabulous package of homemade cards. You don't have to be a pro. Anyway, I tried to do one at papercrafts, but there aren't many swaps going on right now so figured we could just do one. So, if you want to participate, just leave a comment to this post with your name on it. Once I have a list of at least 5 participants, I will contact you via this blog (and your e-mail if I have it) to let you know when and where to send your cards. THIS IS GOING TO BE SO FUN. p.s. anyone can do it- even if I don't know who the heck you are.

FYI

I edited the html to make the overall body wider. Let me know if you like it or if it works on all comps- I can change it back if you like.
(Nicole- if you need to change it back remember: outer 660 {header too), main 410 ; side I think stays the same)
