Photo tour requested-

Meg's graduation from Dixie College:

I know I know- I seriously feel like my life is out of control! I've struggled to keep up with everything this year and May is always insane. Plus- I've been working on a secret blog project since January that I have to pour a ton of time into each night so I don't get here as often as I wish. Add to everything the house... oh the house. I am absolutely in love with it and amazed by all measure that we actually got it and did this for ourselves... but it is taking forever! Just today though I discovered that our warranty we made the bank pay for IS going to cover a brand spankin' new central vac!!! Yipee. Anyhow, you are all absolutely invited to hang out at my house any time so consider this a wide open invitation.

Speaking of that, I feel guilty I've never been to Oregon. Ci- did you know that I study your pictures, every corner, to find details of your home. How about a photo tour? I've been missing you lately and thinking how grateful I am that we had each other in high school.

Add to the photo tour: Alana- pictures of Ben... stat! I'm feeling even more guilty that I haven't called you and checked in. Everything okay? I was positively floored by how luminous and energetic you were when I came to see the little thing. He is so dang cute.

For now I have to run. I work every day this week and am preparing my cloggers for our performance in Disneyland in a couple weeks. At least the recital is done and only 5 more days of school!!!! I've almost made it!!! Praise the Lord!!!!

Easter Sunday:

Williams - One Lucky Day of Warmth

Where is everyone? I feel like I am the only one posting here.

We had another warm day. We actually hit 70 which means bathing suits and swim suits in our house. Nora especially loved the water fun.

Williams - Easter & Birthday Celebrations

Ward Easter Egg Hunt - The event was well attended and there were 1100 eggs scattered around the church. The kids scored.
Nora found two eggs and was happy as can be especially when she discovered what was inside.

Herbie's new Tonka truck that he got for his birthday is Nora's new favorite toy (I think she likes it more than Herbie).

Herbie is into rockets and astronauts right now. I was going to make him a Ligtening McQueen car cake for his birthday because Kelli gave me her old Cars pan. I started to make it yesterday and asked Herbie if he wanted to help me, when he saw the Cars cake pan he said, "I don't want that kind of cake, I want a rocket ship cake." I was crushed because for once I was going to do something cool for a cake since I had a cake pan mold. Needless to say, I scraped the Cars theme and went with a rocket cake. It turned out okay after I got over my panic attack and hot flashes because icing the cake was stressful. The problem was that Herbie loves the color red so I wanted to make red icing for the cake but I couldn't get red only pink and I didn't want to put pink on his cake, after blood, sweat and tears, I discarded the precious frosting and started over and chose to go with green and blue. Good news, Herbie loved it!!! I used chocolate cake for Grandma and the rocket was for Herbie because I don't want to make or eat two cakes. Herbie turned 4 and Grandma McClean turned 59.

I made this amazing Happy Birthday banner about a month ago. I have no wall space so we hung it from the ceiling.

Darth Vader is in our presence. Herbie is obsessed with anything Star Wars.

He got this costume as a birthday gift. Check out this hilarious commercial for VW on you tube.

Williams - Hiking Silver Falls

Since I am in charge of 3rd year certification at Girl's Camp this year, I have to take them on a hike before camp and an orienteering activity. I decided that I wanted to go on the hike and try the orienteering before I actually take them so today we set out for Silver Falls and tried out Geocaching. Our friends the Melanson's came along on our little adventure and they got a taste of just how "fly by the seat of the pants we are". The weather was amazing and we really enjoyed seeing/feeling the big ball of burning gas in the sky for a change.

Williams - It's Official - Church Business

As of Sunday, I am callingless. I was officially released from the RS Presidency on Sunday. I served as the 2nd Counselor for about 3 years in my current ward and 1 year in my previous ward. You look forward to being released the entire time you are in the calling and then when the time comes to actually leave, it isn't all it is cracked up to be. It is much harder to leave than anticipated and now I have to figure out what to do with my spare time that was spent going to a million meetings. I am really going to miss it. I loved the women that I worked with and I think I enjoy the stress of it all. Herb and I pretty much traded places. All those years that I served in RS and went to school, Herb served in the nursery. Now he goes to school and serves in the EQ Presidency. The Bishop said that he doesn't have a new calling for me and then told me that my calling was to care for my family and especially my mom at this time.

I am not completely free though, because I actually get to go to girl's camp as a leader again this year. This is my 3rd year serving at camp and I love it. I get to take all the 3rd years on a hike in a couple weeks and then I will spend 4 days at camp in June as the 3rd year certification leader. The only difference between this year and the previous times I have gone to camp is the fact that I was also still in RS Presidency the last two times.

Williams - From Harley to Honda

Herb claims that a part of him died because he traded in his Harley for a Honda. Apparently, "real men" don't drive Honda's. Beware: Don't call the color of the car charcoal because it is "Gun Metal Gray". We compromised, I let Herb get a coupe if he bought a Honda. He didn't even want a car in the first place, he wanted a Ford F150 (for a commuter car). He needed a commuter car for his new job. Yep, new job, 4th one in fours years. He now works for IVOXY Consulting. They are based out of Seattle. He works from home (his office is in the garage) and he travels to client sites in the Portland area. It is very unpredictable and we are still adjusting to his crazy schedule. More money but a big thumbs down on the hours.

Sage told one of my friends that Herb got a new car and it only cost $2 after he traded in his motorcycle (I wish). Then she preceeded to tell her that she was mad. She said, "My dad promised me that he would buy a kids motorcycle helmet and take me for a ride on it. He broke his promise because he never bought a helmet and he never took me for a ride and now he doesn't even have it anymore."

Williams - Watch out for Herbie

We were stopping to pick up a pizza for dinner the other day and Herbie said, "Can we get rootbeer with it?" Herb said, "I don't know." and Herbie said, "If you don't, I will get mean at you and punch you in the face." Then at church the next day, Herb and I were speaking and Herb's talk was on a talk called "Slow to Anger". He started out by telling this funny story and then told the Bishopric that they asked the wrong Herb to speak since Herbie apparently has anger issues. One day, we were talking about the Bishop coming over to put in our new front door. Herbie said he would need his help because he was strong. Grandma asked him who made him strong and he said, "My spirit. Jesus made me strong so I can help everybody."

Williams - One Nice Day

Once upon a time, there was a nice day in our neck of the woods.

Translation: No rain, sun, 54 degrees.

You have to take advantage of the beautiful ones so I decided to let the kids play in the front yard while I messed with my camera and tried to take pictures while using my manual settings. I know that when I use manual settings the pictures are much more glorious but I am lazy and just flip it to auto all the time.

This is the result:

Nora loves to tease Dakota (dog) and grab her legs and nose under the fence.

She is also our child who is the least scared of the dog. Go figure!

Herbie and Sage think they are mowing the lawn with these pruning shears.

Nora loved this chair she just kept coming back to it and climbing in and sitting and staring at the street.

Today

^Ballet day. She gets so excited and starts screaming with joy when I tell her it's ballet day. I watch her in class and she doesn't stop smiling the entire time. Pure, pure joy.

Ben loves watching her. She said, "Look, Mom, at how far he can turn his head." because he wouldn't take his eyes off her and tracked her wherever she walked.
See...

Awww, I wuv him. He's such a snuggler and it's the darndest thing but I can totally tell he likes me back. :)

Aaaaand... if I ever get my hands on the son of a gun that invented Moon Dough...
Ima gonna kill him.

It has made its merry way practically everywhere, even my bra.

Read these two books this last month. Loved them both. I highly recommend them.

Williams - Near Death Experience

Okay so we weren't that close to dying but I felt my life flash before my eyes for a good 15-20 minutes. Last Saturday, we decided to take the kids hiking because it was a sunny day. The hike we picked though happened to be up in some mountains and there was nothing but snow. So much for the nice sunny day. The hike went rather well. It was a bit chilly but the kids had a great time and there was a beautiful waterfall at the end called University Falls. The kids didn't complain, they hiked the whole way and we made it back to the car in one piece.

Then, Herb decided to take a drive on a road we had never been on. I told him as soon as he pulled out that he was going the wrong way and he said, "This road leads to the highway too and so I want to check it out." Don't ever agree to this especially in the winter when there is snow on the ground. We proceeded down the road with no problems until we came to a hill covered in snow. Herb manuevered his way down the hill and at the bottom was a sharp U turn and a ravine on one side. We ended up getting stuck in the snow at the bottom of the hill inches from the ravine. No cell service and the classic, we didn't tell a sole where we were going. Sage kept saying, "Dad, I can see over the edge." I was gripping the dash, but Herb was so casual and handled it so well. He would get out, dig out the tires, climb in, give it some gas, and we would slide sideways and ever closer to the ravine. After repeating this scenario numerous times, we finally made it out of the 3 foot deep snow but had to climb a hill with just as much snow on it. We finally made it to the top and I stopped hyperventaliting and then we realized that the road that actually leads to the highway was completely snowed over and there was nowhere to go but back through the nightmare turn. I was nauscious just thinking about having to go through that scenario again and sure enough we got stuck in the exact same spot. I kept having these nightmare of rolling into the ravine or having to sleep in our cold car all night long and when you have three small children to care for it makes it even more daunting. There life is in our hands. We made it out alive after Herb successfully dug us out. If I wasn't so concerned with my life, I think now that I should have gotten out and taken a picture of our predicament. You will just have to imagine it but I did get some photos of the falls.

Sleep

Last night was an award winner. I didn't shut my eyes until 4a.m. Nights are always hard with a newborn and as the sun sets, the dread sets in too. I never hear a peep from Anika for 12 hours but last night she was having a freak out too. When I put her to bed she could hear Ben crying and I said I was going to go feed him. Apparently she thought I was coming back after so when she woke up in the middle of the night and realized I hadn't come back after feeding him, she lost her mind. I told her to come get in bed with me, yada yada yada, aaaaand she was then awake for three hours, along with me and Ben.

My Mom never lets me complain for long. About anything. It's been that way my whole life. She'll let me get it off my chest and then remind me of all the good things. She is so funny and made up a whole scenario for me to think about. She told me to just think of the Mom in Japan who's my age with a baby boy born on the same day as Ben. They have no electricity, food, water. The husband is gone, baby is colicky, and all its cute little clothes were washed away in the tsunami. She even made up a name for the poor Japanese baby. The weird thing to think about is this girl and baby are real. There really is a baby that exact age and in that exact scenario, surely. That poor mother!

So when I'm awake at night, walking laps around my dining table, trying to calm Ben, I turn my thought pattern to gratitude for my warm house and food, a healthy baby, and a cozy bed. Gratitude truly is the key to happiness. And my Mom is expert.

I've seen some interesting television the last four weeks in the wee hours. It had been years since I watched Three's Company and it's kind of growing on me again... Come and knock on my door. When Anika was a baby, all I watched in the middle of the night was the weather channel.

This is me, glued to my rocking chair and nursing. And what I look like desperate for sleep. I'm pretty sure my flesh is growing into the fabric like that 1,000 lb woman who didn't leave her couch for a few years. Also pretty sure I'm soon to be a 1,000lb woman if I don't stop drinking 1,000+ calories a day in cranberry juice. I've been on this cranberry juice thing for two months now. C a n ' t. Q u i t. T h e. J u i c e.

But back to nursing and mothering. I'm tired. But happy to do it. :) And grateful for my healthy and happy boss...

I've wasted a good amount of daylight playing with photo booth on Janna and Mike's new ipad.

Ben's Birth Story: The Prologue

Was I really seeing this happen?

Late December and into early January, I had blood drawn A LOT. My liver enzymes were elevated and I had to go in often to check them. The following takes place in my doctor's office around 34 weeks pregnant.

What I was seeing as I looked down at my bare arm with the sleeve rolled up was the nurse's very long, very acrylic, very un-glov-ed blue and glittery thumbnail. It was feeling around for a vein. Feeling, feeling. Surely, I thought, she's going to wipe that spot with alcohol again before the needle pokes me. (Who hasn't seen all the 20/20 episodes about fecal matter underneath fingernails and in the beer nuts?)

The best part was that she did put on gloves. As protocol requires, I'm sure. But then she opened a drawer and fetched scissors so quickly, I'm sure they were placed there for just this purpose... to cut her thumb free! Snip!

More shocking was the fact I was watching this and letting it happen. To my body. It takes a long time to get blood out of me and the whole time I was giving myself a speech: Alana, why did you not say something? It's your body, you know. Who cares if she thinks you're being difficult. Next time you need to speak up. And I agreed with myself.

She couldn't get blood from anywhere, hand or arm. So she took the "sterile" glove off, threw it in the trash and left for a moment. When she came back, I watched the whole episode re-run. This is your chance, Alana... the pep talk to myself continued... you know what's going to happen. Say something, foolish me. Or please, nurse with the mohawk, could we just drop the pretense of the glove? Just leave the ****er off!

But I let her do it. Again! And I was much ashamed of myself. I know I'm paranoid and wasn't going to get some disease but it made me mad because it was simply sick and gross and totally unexpected. It made me mad because I didn't speak up for myself and my body.

I can see that very long, very acrylic, very un-glov-ed blue and glittery thumbnail now. It will forever be a symbol for me. I'm not going to fly a flag with The Blue Nail on it. But I will see it in my mind's eye every time I'm tempted to play the diplomat. Every time I'm tempted to toss certain expectations or standards aside to avoid being a difficult patient. Or friend. Or parent. Or person.

Really Wish I Hadn't...

... missed the 1950's.

That's my Mom at 17. The boy (Don) just e-mailed my Mom this long-lost photo. It was an advertisement for some Inn they modeled for. My Mom says the 1950's really were as great as they are portrayed. The girls wore dresses to school... and girdles... no matter how great your figure was. Girdle's with boning! And they really did go to a burger joint with a juke box and shakes. But my Mom said the girls who wore poodle skirts were dorks. My Mom said they just couldn't believe it the first time they heard rock and roll. It was like what is this? My Mom said she played the song Rock Around The Clock over and over on the record player until her Mom grabbed the record and threw it out the front door like a frisbee. I really wish I could have seen that era. It seems like the most perfect American decade.

...Aaaaand... One Funny Story About Vodka

I was in labor. It was stormy, blustery. I had been walking around and around the house, pausing to bend over to relieve my back during contractions. Janna came over to see me off to the hospital and told me this...

Just moments before she came over, Janna had been talking to my Mom at Janna's house. She mentioned to my Mom that she had sensed Alex's presence around the last few days. At the very moment those words were coming out of her mouth, they heard a loud rattling outside and glanced towards the window. And there it was... an empty quart of vodka rolling, rolling, rolling down our driveway. It rolled right on up to our sidewalk and stopped.

If Alex were to send a sign, that would be it. Only because he was one of the funniest people on earth. No dove or rainbow here. Classic. Sure it wasn't Dad's ghost? Naw, he would have sent his beverage of choice... rum. (It's how we tell the two ghosts apart.)

I love my hilarious family. My entire labor, I kept remembering the bottle. It was just the comic relief I needed.

Two Funny Stories About Pills

#1

As ritualistic as the passing of the sacrament itself is my Mother passing mints down the aisle
after the sacrament. As soon as the Aaronic priesthood is excused to sit with their families, The Keeper of the Mints reaches deep into her pockets to retrieve our third course. She counts out just enough for the family so you simply take one and pass the rest on. That's been standard procedure for as long as I remember. Imagine my surprise, then, when I once looked in my hand and saw I had been handed one mint and a Lortab.

Add to the humor the fact that it was my Dad who had passed on this unusual handful. We were in Pine Valley and it was the last time he would ever attend church. It was also the first time he attended in nearly 20 years. The little white chapel was being renovated so we were outside in a big white revival-style tent and the talk was all about the final state of the soul. My Mom had recently rescued him from Telluride after a terrible back injury he acquired during a drunken fall down his loft ladder. The pills were for his recovery and my Mom was guardian of them.

Upon realizing what was in my hand, I was struck with a severe case of the church laughs. I passed the contraband back to my Dad, who then passed it back to my Mom. They both got a little chuckle. That's just what one craves during church. (Nothing like a false sense of well-being to set you on fire with the spirit.) Don't you wish they still used wine? That three-hour clock would tick a little quicker.

________________________________________________________________

#2

My Mom went to Telluride a lot during the last years of my Dad's life. A few times she went because he had
been hospitalized after a bender. He was detoxing in the hospital and then my Mom would bring him back to St. George to help him recover. This cycle was perpetuated until the end.

My Mom was living by the mall in a corner unit of the government subsidized senior citizen housing and working at Scaldoni's. She was at work one night when I stopped by to check on him. After detox, alcoholics are given something like Xanax or Librium to help calm their nerves and keep them from drinking. Once again, my Mom was keeper of the pills and she had told me she hid them in the house from my Dad and would only hand them out to him if he was desperate.

The first thing he asked me when I came over to my Mom's was if I knew where Mom had put his pills. He didn't know I knew she had hid them. But alas, I couldn't resist those poor puppy dog eyes... and I enlisted in the Xanax rescue operation. We went through the whole house, all while with me kind of hoping we wouldn't find them. (I would have to answer to my Mother.)

After searching the entire tiny apartment, my Dad's blue eyes drifted out the sliding glass door and focused on the dumpster. "You don't think your Mother accidentally put them in the garbage, do you?", he asked. A minute later, I was straddling the giant blue dumpster and hopping into the communal garbage of dozens of senior citizens. My Dad stood beside it, straining to look over the edge, and pointing out bags he thought looked promising. He puzzled, "Maybe we should search them inside so people wont see us going through their garbage?" One by one, we took white garbage bags inside my Mom's house and searched them for pills. Still. No pills.

Upon a final sweep through the house, we eventually found the Xanax in a shoe in my Mom's closet. My Dad, bless his heart, was trying desperately to conceal his excitement. I couldn't help but be happy for him, whether I had hell to pay with my Mother or not. Better Xanax than rum. For an alcoholic, anyway.

Whenever I think of that day, I laugh and laugh. It puts a smile on my face. Sometimes I wonder if something is wrong with me because I see humor in everything. But then I remember it was my Dad and Mom who taught me to laugh at everything in life. If you have to find the humor in a dark place, so be it.

I love my Dad. Despite all the horror he put our family through, he was SO EASY TO LOVE. I pray all the time, pleading that he wont have to suffer for any of the sins he committed against me by abandoning us. Because I forgive him and love him through and through. I'm grateful everyday that we regained our relationship in those last years and really grew close. I miss him. Pills, please.

Anika's Room

Before we get to Anika's new room, let's talk about Ben. Brandon pointed out to me that Ben Larson sounds like Bin Laden. Oops. That never occurred to me while naming him. Oh well. He is still being really good and snuggly. I cannot believe what a different experience this is compared to Anika. It is night and day. I love him and kiss him about one million times a day because I know he'll grow up soon and not let me do it as much as I'd like.

Anika moved out of the nursery to make way for Ben. I realized I never shared her room with you guys. The rooms are so tiny but I feel like I do a good job making them seem bigger and keeping A LOT of toys and crap organized. A key feature that accomplishes this is the Ikea bookshelf. Thanks, Ciara, for the inspiration. I bought the identical one and it does wonders!

The thing that makes the biggest difference in these tiny rooms is removing the closet doors. Brandon freaked on me but I maintain it's the only way to make it work. It makes the room seem larger and I don't have to open the closet to get anything. You could never do this with big people's clothes but baby and kid clothes are so cute, it's not an eyesore. I swear it makes the room seem twice as big.

I also put storage bins underneath her bed. Anika picked out that dog picture on her wall. Every time we were at TJ Maxx she would ask to go see it. She would laugh and laugh at it, saying how funny their glasses were and kept asking me if we could buy it. When it went on clearance, we did just that. It makes me smile every time I look at it... especially because she picked it out. What a funny little girl.

I got the nursery totally ready for Ben. But then he came and the whole room got stripped of its belongings. There is nothing left in there but a spinning hubcap. And Brandon. Yes, the crib is in my room. The glider got moved to the living room, along with the nightstand. And B got booted to the nursery. It will stay this way, I'm sure, for a few months until Ben regulates his sleep pattern. Then the crib can move back to the nursery and B can come back to bed. Our set-up now works well, though. Then I can deal with Ben and Brandon's sleep isn't disrupted. (Lucky!)

Best Laugh I've Had Recently

Alana is a...

Wuss

Making the transition to two children has left my mouth agape in awe of every mother in the world. I don't know how they do it. Without help, anyway. I'm pretty sure God knew I would need a lot of help and that's why He arranged so nicely for my Mom and sister to live next door to me. I really believe we are clustered together here purposefully by God himself. My Mom was with me constantly the first two weeks home with Ben. Often, Janna would take Anika somewhere and my Mom would take care of Ben to let me nap without listening to his grunting. (He grunts in his sleep!) One night when I had been particularly sleep-deprived, my Mom stayed over until midnight and let me hop in bed at 9 to get a head-start on sleep. She cooked and cleaned and brought me cranberry juice in bed, ever careful to keep her big baby girl hydrated and her milk flowing. I recognize I am utterly spoiled by having all this help. How does anyone do it on their own? I am a total wuss. And in awe of women everywhere.

Controlling Beeyotch

I have to try really, really hard to not be a controlling psycho. It comes so naturally to me to wear the pants in my marriage. I don't like this and it has taken me years and years to tone it down even one degree. I am thinking about this because this morning Brandon called me to ask me if he could do a garden box on our porch. I'd rather have him plant to the side of the porch and told him so. I finally told him it's his deal and do it however he wants because a life wherein you cannot do as you please is crap. I'm getting better at letting things go. This is nothing short of a miracle. I don't want to be "that wife". Once Quinn left a message on MY phone asking me if Brandon could go fishing. I had never laughed so hard in my life. I should have saved it forever. Brandon was cracking up too. After being friends with us for a decade, one would have to be totally blind to miss the 'Alana-is-controlling dynamic'. I hope I can continue to get better at this wife business.

Wearer of White Hanes V-Necks

Somebody out there please help me. I can't wear any of my clothes! I have always sported the white Hanes but postpartum, it's literally the only thing I can wear comfortably. I can't take it anymore. I think I'll hit up Ross after Ben's appointment this morning. Please, heaven above, let me find one shirt. ONE shirt. That's all I ask. I'll wear the white hanes everyday if I must but let me have ONE thing to wear when I go somewhere. Pray for me, friends.

Need

I need to blog. For myself.

I love being a stay-at-home Mom. But would you agree with me that every rose has its thorn? The hard part for me is feeling so isolated. I'm so grateful my Mom and sister are close because without them I don't think I could do it. But the number of adults I converse with each day is small. AND IT MAKES ME TOTALLY INSANE!

One thing I've noticed over the years since we started the JNAC is that it really brings me some sort of strange joy to write posts for it. Whether it is short or long, lame or serious, doesn't matter. It just makes me feel like I am connecting to other human beings... you guys! I've resolved to do it much much more. Not even so much because I want to but because I NEED to. Writing is something that can be totally mine, having nothing to do with kids or groceries or anything else. Something completely separate.

__________________________________________

My favorite baby products for Ben:

I could not live without my movement sensor pad! As little as I sleep, I'd sleep even less if I was compulsively watching him breathe. It gives me such peace of mind to doze off knowing that if something goes wrong with baby I will know it. The alarm went off one night when Anika was a baby and sure enough, her face was all smashed into the mattress and she wasn't breathing! WTF!

And my new favorite is the
miracle blanket. I call it the straight jacket because... well, that's essentially what it is. Sad, huh? But Ben loves it. Swaddle with anything else like I did in the past and they wriggle right on out. He stays swaddled tightly all night, even nursing, without budging. Genius invention.

When I swaddle with anything else during the day, I am loving these
muslin cotton blankets. I love how big they are and how they feel. They keep babe cozy without making him too hot. I vote these my best purchase this time around and know they will serve us well during the hot summer.
